‘Howlin Mat'

Mat plies his trade in a world of ever decreasing numbers of venues but with more and more solo artists wanting gigs. It's important for a solo artist to connect with the audience from the outset and Mat certainly did this with an eclectic set of original tunes and standards played on a Dan Electro electric guitar and a cigar box through a small Dan Electro combo producing a superb gritty blues tone - ideal for the music that Mat performs. The audience were very quiet (unusual!!) and listened to Mat's music and were very appreciative of his singing and playing both of which were top notch interspersed with humorous interludes - think he should produce a booklet of musician friendly lay-bys throughout the country!! A thoroughly professional approach from Mat was reflected in the quality of the set and he is sure to make a return to the club. PS No payment was received for this review as he is a skint blues muso!!!!

Ripley Blues, 18th April 2015 - Support for Band of Friends

"The large Ripley crowd were very impressed with support act, Howlin' Mat, who played and sang a number of Blues classics. In between he kept the audience well entertained with his chat."

The Old Bush Blues Festival 2015

A blistering set of blues songs and stories played by 'Howlin Mat', an English version of 'Seasick Steve' who mirrors him in living an almost semi nomadic life to live the dream of playing the blues."
